“I am only one, but I am one.
I can’t do everything, but I can do something.
What I can do, that I ought to do.
And what I ought to do, I shall do!”
Edward Everett Hale
The foundation is this: You are an individual who makes a difference. Regarding housekeeping (or area organization), immediate, individual, independent effort should be applied. Housekeeping is important for preventing slips, trips, and falls. Some hazards need to be addressed by you as soon as possible. You can not do it all, but you can do something. You as an individual can command safety by:
· Keeping walkways, aisles, and stairs free from materials, trays, tools, and other hazards
· Keeping the floor clear of trash and plastic straps
· Blocking off and marking floors or areas that are being cleaned or repaired and likewise, respecting any barriers.
· Promptly cleaning spills or leaks on floors, stairs, entryways and loading docks and/or isolating the hazard and requesting immediate help.
Often, we recognize that which ought to be done. The marvel is this. United with your Sisters and Brothers, as you shall do, you become a force that benefits the whole of our membership. This is true in matters of safety. This is true in matters of service. You, ultimately, are a force that benefits the American people. You are the American Postal Workers Union Local 232. It starts with you, the one!
“When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we’re spirits – not animals. There’s something going on in space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty. – Winston Churchill
Here is Part 5 – Train the Significance and Proper Use of PS Form 1767 to enhance the safety culture within the USPS. It can be recognized that when this committee was organized in March 2025 these steps were introduced. We are simply providing a review of our plan with details for your enlightenment.
Awareness is critical to safety. If you feel or witness an unsafe condition, we, among you, ask that you report it. It may be, due to your caring act, that others, too, will be able to realize a safe return to their home.
The official vehicle to report a safety concern is PS Form 1767 – Report of Hazard, Unsafe Condition or Practice. This is a 4-page carbonless form which is easy to complete. Only the very top of the first page of the form is completed by you as you cite the nature and location of the concern.
This form, citing your concern, should be given to your immediate supervisor who is committed by their role to act promptly (within the tour of duty). If the hazard is recognized outside of your immediate station, your supervisor is still committed to addressing the concern. You can expect that you will receive a description of their response as they return the last page (blue) to you. This page is for your keeping, although we, as a union, would be interested in the concern and its resolve.
The PS Form 1767 should be conveniently available and accessible to you. It should be available in a location that you may be able to obtain in anonymity.
THIS DOCUMENT, PS FORM 1767 REPORT of HAZARD, UNSAFE CONDITION OR PRACTICE is a principal engagement tool of the USPS Safety Program. Continue to apply what you have learned about it.
Now let us review how you have made a difference in 9 months.
PS Form 1767’s submitted and recorded for the month of:
November 2024 (before our push) = 4
November 2025 (once you engaged) = 66
Wow! You are an individual that makes the difference!!! These are recorded and archived records. Trust that our team is teaching, coaching, and motivating corrections with management to address your safety concerns and will continue to do so into futurity.
Together, we, The American Postal Workers Union Local 232, are changing the ‘safety’ culture. YOU ARE INCREDIBLE! Keep up the great work!
You have made us American proud!
Tony George – APWU Local 232 Safety Officer
