The news just broke last night with the Washington Post reporting that, according to 6 people familiar, Trump is expected to issue an executive order soon to try and dissolve the USPS Board of Governors, and absorb the USPS under direct control as part of the Commerce Department. Reuters summarizes it here, and the original Washington Post article is here.
National APWU President Mark Dimondstein has already released a statement, please read that here.
In recent months, Trump has reiterated his desire to privatize the Postal Service. Then, just last month, Trump’s team was vetting replacements for Postmaster General DeJoy, suggesting they expected to actually replace him. Then, just this week, Postmaster General DeJoy announced his upcoming departure, and that the Board of Governors would begin looking for a replacement.
If it does happen, we’ll have to see how the Courts and Congress reacts to this before we have any idea how all of this might go. There are legislative and Constitutional protections that are in place that promise Congress’ unique control of the USPS, which the President shouldn’t be able to override by executive order. Either way, it looks like things might get complicated.
